Portfolio

At first CEJCO’s clients tended to be technically inclined, preferring to design their own websites, and using us primarily for Web hosting and domain registration services. Then we started getting requests for help with website design and development.

Our earliest websites were quite primitive in comparison to what we develop today. Now we tend to use WordPress as a content management system for all websites, whether or not they have a blog. We also favor the Thesis theme as it adds a layer of services on top of WordPress, further enhancing its ease of use, allowing our clients to manage their own website content once the initial development is over.

Here is a sampling of our work over the years, in no particular order.

Portsmouth Pro Musica

This website uses WordPress with the Thesis theme. The header graphic was developed by a very gifted graphic designer whose work we enjoy recommending. She also designed the favicon (the 16 × 16 pixel image that appears in the browser’s address bar and the tab).

It is a work still in progress, as it was a redevelopment of an earlier design (left), and some of the capabilities have not yet been ported over to the new site. Even so, the client is very pleased with our work and with the increased traffic to their website.

St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea

This is one of our earlier websites, designed with HTML tables before CSS became the norm. It is due to be redesigned, and we shall highlight its before and after states at that time.

Nevertheless, it is a highly effective website as it is, drawing attention around the world. St. Andrew’s has one of the few lych-gates in this country, and they hear not infrequently from parishes in Great Britain that also have lych-gates. The reason? Web searches find this site.

Summer attendance has grown, as well, as have bookings for weddings. Check out the live site here: http://standrews-by-the-sea.org/

Blog Sites

Marie Brownell's Peter Scott Stringham's blog

Both of these sites are powered by WordPress with the Thesis theme framework.

Marie Brownell (above left) is an independent insurance agent who came to me for help with setting up a video blog. Her posts, nicknamed “Brownie Points,” should help promote her main website, BrownellInsurance.com, which we did not design. This shows how one can use multiple websites—and multiple Web developers—for cross-promotion. And CEJCO can help. In Marie’s case we are providing video coaching services as well. Check the live site out at: http://mariebrownell.com/

Peter Scott Stringham (above right)  is a certified Law of Attraction facilitator who is using his website to promote his speaking and coaching business. He came to us on the recommendation of the SEO-friendly code that WordPress produces. His website is still quite new, but over time we should be able to provide tracking statistics to gauge its success. Here is the live site: http://peterstringham.com/

Domain Name Strategies

As a domain registrar, CEJCO is also a great resource for plotting domain name strategies. The two sites above illustrate this. BrownellInsurance.com is the domain for Marie’s main business, while MarieBrownell.com is for her as an individual, currently used for her video blog. Peter Scott Stringham uses all three names (Carl Eric Johnson can relate to this), but he goes by Peter, Scott, and Peter Scott. In his case, in addition to registering PeterStringham.com, we also registered PeterScottStringham.com. Currently, the latter simply redirects to the former, but domain name strategies can change over time. As long as you have had the forethought to register various variations on your domains (before someone else does), then you have the flexibility to use them however you see fit in the future.

We also recommend registering at least one domain name for every “entity” you wish to promote on the Internet. If you wish to promote your business, then you should register YourBusiness.com. If you also wish to promote yourself or have a blog where you share your personal thoughts with the world, then you should register YourName.com. We follow our own guidelines here at CEJCO: cejco.com is for the business, while carleric.com is Carl’s personal blog.

College Audition Preparation – The Borrie Method

Alexandra Borrie has a thriving business helping high school students prepare for their college auditions. She already owned the domain name CollegeAuditionPrep.com when she came to us. With CEJCO she secured her trademarks with three other domain names:

  • Borrie.biz
  • BorrieApproach.com
  • BorrieMethod.com

For now, all three Borrie-branded domains redirect to her main site, but she has the flexibility to change this over time as her needs change. The borrie.biz domain would be perfect for email purposes—because, in general, shorter is better.

CEJCO followed a similar approach with Portsmouth Pro Musica, altready highlighted above. PPM now owns five domain names:

  • PortsmouthProMusica.org – The official domain name for their site
  • PortsmouthProMusica.com – Registered to protect their name
  • PortsmouthWomensChorus.org – PPM’s original name
  • PortsmouthWomensChorus.com – Registered to protect their original name
  • ppmnh.org – A nice short domain name for email purposes, e.g., info@ppmnh.org

Database-driven Websites

With Carl’s extensive background in relational databases (primarily DB2 and MySQL), using databases to generate dynamic content was a natural progression. Unfortunately, examples of these sites will have to wait for permission from their owners, or for ways to mask their identities. Database-driven websites are often used for security purposes, such as membership sites with login control, and the like.
