About Us

Carl Eric Johnson & Company (affectionately known as CEJCO) was incorporated in Illinois in 1995. The founder, Carl Eric Johnson, had been working since 1988 for Platinum Technology (which is no more, having been bought by CA in 1999).

His main area of expertise was IBM’s database DB2, and he taught and consulted for some of North America’s leading DB2 professionals—database designers, database administrators, and application developers alike.

When he formed his own corporation, he contracted his services back to Platinum. Meanwhile he also developed a working relationship with Themis and taught and consulted for them until quite recently.

He took much of the year 1996 off so he could author his own series of technical courses in DB2 SQL. These courses earned him high praise as well as handsome royalties for many years.

So how did Carl Eric Johnson & Company become such a leader in website development and social media consulting? Simple. These are services that Carl uses for his own enterprises, and it was a natural next step to offer them to others.

It all started in 2000 with Web hosting and domain registration services. Known for very fair pricing and personal service, Carl grew his customer base, initially attracting other Web developers who simply wanted a reliable platform for their own websites and domain names.

Then word began to spread that Carl would develop websites for people that weren’t technically inclined. What started out as pro bono work for some of his favorite charities and nonprofits soon became a thriving business of its own. Smaller sites are developed entirely in house, but Carl also welcomes larger projects, as well, having developed a growing network of fellow technicians whose skills complement his own. Check out his portfolio.

CEJCO’s websites all adhere to strict HTML and CSS standards using Open Source technologies such as Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (a k a LAMP). Carl’s expertise in PHP grew out of his background in databases. Still having great respect for the sophistication and power of IBM DB2, Carl saw the value of adopting MySQL for most of his Web clients because of its price (you can’t beat free!) and its ubiquity (it comes with most Web hosting services). To communicate with MySQL (and DB2, for that matter), the language of choice is PHP. But PHP is so much more than simply a set of calls to the back-end database. It is an entire development environment of its own. WordPress, itself, is written in PHP as are the themes that extend its capabilities, such as Thesis.

Carl’s most recent Web projects have all been developed with WordPress for a very simple reason: Why reinvent the wheel? WordPress is a great content management system, and its PHP flexibility is easy to customize. Carl’s next area of expertise is sure to be Drupal for exactly the same reason.
